Methods Monday: The Tetralemma – Finding Clarity When Two Options Aren’t Enough

Do you know those moments when two options stand against each other and neither of them truly feels right? That’s exactly where the Tetralemma unfolds its power. The method invites you to think beyond the classic “either-or” and discover new room for action. It creates clarity, broadens perspectives, and makes visible what was previously unseen. Often surprisingly light – and deeply embodied.

What is the Tetralemma?

The Tetralemma originates in Indian logic and was further developed for systemic coaching by Matthias Varga von Kibéd and Insa Sparrer.

The core principle:

Many decisions feel blocking because internally we keep swinging between two poles. The Tetralemma shows that besides option A and option B, there are three additional perspectives – resulting in five positions in total that significantly expand the decision space:

  1. Option A

  2. Option B

  3. Both

  4. Neither

  5. And something entirely different

Tetralemma im Coaching

This structure opens up spaces for thinking and feeling. And it makes something tangible: there are almost always more possibilities than our mind initially allows.

Structure and Application

The Tetralemma is often used as a spatial setup. The five positions are marked in the room, for example with cards, notes, or floor markers.

Coachees move through the positions one by one and explore questions such as:

  • How does this option feel – in my body, in my breathing, in my posture?

  • What opportunities does it reveal?

  • What risks or costs come with it?

  • What becomes possible when I take on this perspective?

Through this embodied experience, a remarkable clarity often emerges – not just as a thought, but as a felt sense of direction.

The Coaching Process

  1. Clarify the topic and the decision conflict: What is this really about, and what is at stake?

  2. Set up Option A: The coachee steps into the position and senses what this choice would mean.

  3. Set up Option B: What shifts here? What internal reaction arises?

  4. Explore “Both”: What combinations, transitions, or hybrid forms become visible?

  5. Explore “Neither”: What emerges when the pressure dissolves and neither pole needs to be chosen?

  6. Explore “Something entirely different”: The space for the unexpected – new ideas, needs, or solutions often arise here.

  7. Integration & next steps: Which position now feels most aligned? What concrete actions follow from it?

Why This Method Is So Powerful

  • It dissolves binary thinking and creates real choices.

  • It uses body awareness as a decision-making resource (instead of relying only on pro/con lists).

  • It opens creativity without pressure, because there is no immediate need to find “the right” solution.

  • It often reveals surprising solutions that were previously invisible.

  • It strengthens the sense of inner freedom and self-efficacy.

Who Is the Tetralemma Suitable For?

  • People facing decision conflicts (private or professional)

  • Leaders who want to evaluate strategic options

  • Teams that feel stuck and need new perspectives

  • Coachees who remain caught in “yes, but …”

  • Anyone who wants to expand their range of possible actions

A Brief Method Note: The 3-Chair Method

If you know my Methods Monday on the 3-chair method, you’ll notice the logic is related. There, too, new insights emerge because perspectives become spatially tangible and inner parts or positions can be more clearly differentiated. The Tetralemma is especially helpful when the focus is on external options (A/B and the expanded possibilities).

Conclusion

The Tetralemma is a powerful method for loosening stuck decisions and making new pathways visible. It connects logic, intuition, and embodied awareness – and often leads to clarity faster than many expect. Especially because it allows you to step out of “either-or” thinking and reconnect with a genuine sense of choice.

If you would like to experience this method in coaching or use it for your own decision-making processes, I would be happy to support you.👉 Let’s schedule a session.
