Method Monday: The Values Card Method – Making your values visible and tangible

Sometimes we’re not entirely sure what truly matters to us. Often, we simply feel whether something fits—or doesn’t. The values card method creates clarity exactly at this point. It makes values not only visible, but above all tangible. By intuitively sorting different terms, we gain access to what truly drives us on a deeper level—often in a surprisingly clear and moving way.

What is the values card method?

The values card method is a simple yet highly effective coaching tool used to identify and prioritize personal values.

Clients work with cards that each represent a value, for example:

  • Freedom

  • Security

  • Success

  • Connection

  • Growth

  • Ease

By sorting these cards, a clear picture of one’s personal value system gradually emerges.

Structure and process

The method is easy to facilitate and highly flexible:

1. Lay out the cards

All value cards are placed visibly (or displayed digitally).

2. Pre-sorting

The cards are divided into three categories:

  • important

  • neutral

  • unimportant

3. Focus

The “important” values are further reduced (e.g. to 4–6 cards).

4. Prioritization

The remaining values are ranked in order of importance.

5. Reflection

Each value is explored more deeply:

  • What does this value mean to you in practice?

  • When do you live it—and when don’t you?

  • How does it show up in your everyday life?

How it works in coaching

In coaching, a very meaningful process often unfolds:

  • At first: playful, often quick sorting

  • Then: pausing at certain words (“Oh, this is more important than I thought…”)

  • Finally: emotional clarity and often powerful aha moments

As a coach, you can support the process with questions like:

  • “Which card do you feel drawn to first?”

  • “Where do you notice resistance?”

  • “Which value is currently missing in your life?”

Why this method is so powerful

The values card method is particularly effective because it is:

  • intuitive and accessible

  • engaging both thinking and feeling

  • creating clarity quickly

  • deepening coaching conversations

It opens a space where values are not only thought about—but truly experienced.

Who is this method for?

This method is ideal for people who:

  • want to understand themselves better

  • don’t yet have clear access to their values

  • are facing change or important decisions

  • prefer a more intuitive coaching approach

Conclusion

The values card method is a wonderful entry point into values work—simple, playful, and at the same time deeply insightful.

It not only shows you what matters to you, but also reconnects you with yourself.

If you want to not only understand your values but truly feel them, this method is a powerful starting point.

I’d be happy to support you in making your values visible—and turning them into clear, aligned decisions.
